Manchester United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has revealed why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed as caretaker manager for the remainder of the season.Jose Mourinho was axed by United following their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday that left them 19 points behind their rivals.2

Ed Woodward released a statement on Manchester United’s website

Solskjaer was then put in temporary charge of the club on Wednesday and will be at the club until May 2019 when he will then return to Molde FK, where his contract as manager runs until 2021Woodward released a statement on Wednesday with the reason why the former United striker was put in charge for the rest of the 2018-19 season.2

He said: Ole is a club legend with huge experience, both on the pitch and in coaching roles. His history at Manchester United means he lives and breathes the culture here and everyone at the club is delighted to have him and Mike Phelan back.We are confident they will unite the players and the fans as we head into the second half of the season. The 45-year-old striker scored 126 goals in 366 appearances for United between 1996 and 2007. In 2008 he became the clubs reserve-team manager, before taking the managerial role at Molde in Norway.
