The January transfer window is seen by many managers as a mid-season distraction. But in recent years, more and more bosses are delving into the market to add reinforcements to their squads.Christian Pulisic joined an illustrious list of players to make an expensive mid-season switch after joining Chelsea for 58million earlier this month. But what are other the priciest January signings of all time? talkSPORT.com has explored the ten most expensive moves to date.
10. Cenk Tosun – 27m, Besiktas to Everton, 2018
The Turk joined Everton last term for a big money fee and upon arrival said Sam Allardyce was a “big part” of his decision to move to the Premier League. He settled in well for the Toffees – netting five goals in 14 appearances, but things have turned sour for the forward this season after falling out of favour with Marco Silva. He has scored just two goals in 16 matches.
109. Wilfried Bony – 28m, Swansea to Manchester City, 2015
Bony joined Manchester City in the winter of 2015 after showing blistering form for Swansea all season. He was signed to replace Edin Dzeko in the team and to provide competition for Sergio Aguero. However, after becoming one of the most expensive African signings of all time, he failed to make an impact with the club and joined Stoke on loan for the 2016/17 season before returning tosouth Wales last summer.
108. Edin Dzeko – 32.5m, Wolfsburg to Manchester City, 2011
Roberto Mancini swooped in on the Bosnian in 2011 after his impressive stint in Germany with Wolfsburg. He was a great asset for City and won the Premier League twice but was deemed surplus to requirements when Bony was signed and then moved to Roma in 2016.He has flourished in Italy but is somewhat struggling for goals this term having only scored twice in 16 Serie A matches.
107. Andy Carroll – 35m, Newcastle to Liverpool, 2011
Sir Kenny Dalglish decided to make a mid-season move for Carroll in 2011 after his impressive goal-scoring record for the Magpies. He had fired Newcaslte back into the big-time from the Championship and made a great start to life in the Premier League – scoring 11 goals in the first half of the season for the Tyneside outfit.Ulitmately, he was a huge disappointment at Liverpool – struggling with injury and bad form with the Reds.
106. Juan Mata – 37m, Chelsea to Manchester United, 2014
The playmaker signed for the Red Devils in 2014 after falling out of favour with the then Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho. He was the Blues’ two-time Player of the Year, and although he has over 150 league appearances for United he has struggled to be as effective at Old Trafford. The Spaniard is now out of contract in the summer.
105. Fernando Torres – 50m, Liverpool to Chelsea, 2011
This record-breaking transfer in 2011 was arguably the most memorable mid-season switch ever.Torres made his name as the best striker in the Premier League for Liverpool – scoring 65 goals for the Reds in three-and-a-half seasons at Anfield. But his decline at Stamford Bridge is now seen as one of the most remarkable falls from grace in the game.He only managed 20 goals in 110 league matches for the Blues.
104. Aymeric Laporte – 57m, Athletic Bilbao to Manchester City, 2018
The Frenchman joined last year in City’s title-winning season but did not immediately break into the starting line-up.This term he has been a regular for the side and has been impressive at the heart of defence with his ability on the ball.He has also occasionally been used as full-back due to injuries to both Benjamin Mendy and Fabian Delph.
103. Christian Pulisic – 58m, Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea, 2019
Earlier this month the American became the latest player to join this list.Pulisic is now Chelsea’s second most expensive signing ever after Alvaro Morata. He will make his Blues debut next season, though, after being sent back on loan to Dortmund for the remainder of the season.
102. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 60m, Borussia Dortmund to Arsenal, 2018
The Gabon international is another player to make a big money move to England from Dortmund. He hit the ground running immediately in north London after signing last term, scoring ten goals in 12 starts. He has been equally impressive this season too and is the second top scorer (14) in the league, level with Harry Kane.
101. Virgil Van Dijk, 75m, Southampton to Liverpool, 2018
The Netherlands international joined Jurgen Klopp’s side for a world record fee for a defender last season.Liverpool’s towering centre-back has been worth it since his lucrative move.He has shored up the Reds defence that has cost them so dearly in recent years and won the December Player of the Month award. He has also guided his side to the most clean sheets (13) this season.
