Championship round-up: Leeds return to top of table with Swansea win as Norwich slip up at Preston
Here is a round-up of all the action from Wednesday nights Championship matches

Leeds 2-1 Swansea

Leeds returned to the top of the Sky Bet Championship table as they took advantage of Norwich’s defeat at Preston with a 2-1 victory over Swansea. The Swans were left with an improbable task at half-time after goals from birthday boy Pontus Jansson and Jack Harrison had put United in control.Leeds had gone on to win all 13 league games in which they had scored the opening goal this season and that record was never truly under threat despite a period of panic after Oli McBurnie’s late penalty.Leeds are top of the league once again2

Preston 3-1 Norwich

Norwich’s Championship title challenge suffered a hammer blow as they slipped to a 3-1 defeat away at Preston.Goals from Ben Davies, Paul Gallagher and Sean Maguire secured a hard-earned three points for Alex Neil’s side and ended the Canaries’ six-game unbeaten run in the league.Norwich now slip down to second place in the table, with Preston up to 13th as they extended their own unbeaten run to six games with victory at Deepdale.

Brentford 1-0 Aston Villa

Neal Maupay was the hero once again for Brentford as his curling stoppage-time winner ensured Dean Smith’s return to Griffin Park was an unhappy one.It was a deserved 1-0 victory for the Bees, who had enjoyed roughly 60 per cent possession and created a hatful of chances against a Villa side which struggled to demonstrate a cutting edge. However, the hosts’ dominance looked to be for nothing until Maupay popped up with his 18th league strike of the campaign to maintain their unbeaten record against the Birmingham outfit since their relegation from the Premier League.

Ipswich 1-1 Derby

Derby remain in touch with the Sky Bet Championship play-off places after a hard-fought 1-1 draw at bottom club Ipswich.Goals came from former Ipswich player Tom Lawrence in the second minute for the visitors, with Jon Nolan replying for the Suffolk side in the 55th minute.

Wigan 0-0 Stoke

Stoke’s Joe Allen was closest to breaking the deadlock as his side played out a drab goalless Sky Bet Championship contest with Wigan at the DW Stadium.Neither side possessed the quality to break the deadlock, although both defended well enough to warrant their point.Stoke came closest to sneaking a winner at the end of the first half, with Allen’s shot taking a deflection off Wigan defender Cedric Kipre, before kissing the outside of the post.Michael Jacobs of Wigan challenges Moritz Bauer of Stoke2

Sheffield United 1-0 Middlesbrough

Richard Stearman was Sheffield United’s unlikely hero as his first goal of the season secured a 1-0 win at home to Middlesbrough as the Blades closed in on the Sky Bet Championship top two.The substitute headed home Oliver Norwood’s cross just past the hour mark to see off a spirited Boro side, who had Daniel Ayala sent off two minutes later, as United showed no ill-effects from their Villa capitulation last Friday night.

Reading 2-1 Blackburn

Reading moved out of the bottom three with a 2-1 win over Blackburn. The Royals took the lead in first-half stoppage time when John Swift fired in – their first shot on target after plenty of Blackburn pressure.Rovers were level with nine minutes later when Amari Bell, at fault for the Reading opener, fired home. But it was Reading’s night as Nelson Oliveira won it in style with a powerful shot five minutes from time.
