Liverpool regained their spot at the Premier League’s summit but were unable to take advantage of Manchester United’s injury crisis after playing out a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.The result sees Jurgen Klopp’s men go a point above Manchester City but the Red Devils picked up three injuries in the first-half so it could be viewed as a missed opportunity.3

The visitors controlled the possession of the game in the first-half but struggled to create any notable opportunities.Injuries were the main talking points before the break with Liverpool having to bring Daniel Sturridge on for Roberto Firmino after the Brazilian picked up an ankle injury.But United had a full blown injury crisis in the first 45.Ander Herrera and Juan Mata were forced off inside the first 25 minutes with knocks – Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard on in their place.3

United nearly broke the deadlock just before the break but Reds glovesman Alisson Becker did brilliantly to prevent Lingard from rounding him.And moments later, Lingard was forced off himself with injury, clearly not fit from the knock he picked up against Paris Saint-Germain 12 days ago.The home side had a decent spell just after the break and had a couple of chances but efforts from Paul Pogba and Sanchez were both flagged offside. Georginio Wijnaldum then had a header deflected just wide off Scott McTominay on 70 minutes.United thought they had taken the lead moments later when Joel Matip diverted Chris Smalling’s low effort into his own net although the goal was disallowed for offside and replays show it was just about the correct call.Smalling then had a great chance to win it in stoppage-time but the defender didn’t gamble and make a run on Romelu Lukaku’s menacing cross from the right as both sides played out a goalless draw with each other for the first time since 1991.3

Smalling nearly gave the uneventful game a dramatic finale
